Comiskey Park was the home ballpark to Major League Baseball's Chicago White Sox from 1910 to 1990 and was named after their owner Charles Comiskey. Comiskey purchased the team in 1894 when they were a Minor League baseball team known as the Sioux City Cornhuskers. Six years later, Comiskey moved the team to Chicago where they became one of the 8 charter franchises of the American League. The ballpark also spent a number of years known as "White Sox Park".
Comiskey Park was the site of the famous "Black Sox Scandal" in which 8 Chicago White Sox players were banned for allegedly throwing the World Series and ultimately giving the title to the Cincinnati Reds. Comiskey Park also hosted three Major League All-Star games including the inaugural All-Star game in 1933. Eventual White Sox owner Bill Veeck was the first Major League owner to implement the picnic areas in the outfields.
Although many Chicago residents wanted the White Sox to preserve Comiskey Park the way the Chicago Cubs have with Wrigley Field, current White Sox and Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdor objected. Reinsdorf threatened to move the White Sox to Florida if a new ballpark wasn't constructed. Guaranteed Rate Field, the team's current home, opened in 1991 as "New Comiskey Park" before changing it's name to U.S. Cellular Field in 2003.
With so much history, we wanted to give Chicago White Sox fans a chance to take a small walk down memory lane. Enjoy!
